Number of Americans engaging in political discourse on social networking sites on the rise: Pew:

A Pew Research Center report indicated that online social networks have become political hotspots in the United States.

Approximately 39 percent of US adults engaged in political activity in Internet communities during the 2012 US presidential campaign, according to a Pew report titled Civic Engagement in the Digital Age released late Wednesday.

By comparison, only 26 percent of people in the United States used online social networks in any form or fashion during the prior presidential election in 2008, Pew reported.

“The typical American who is politically active engages with political content across a range of venues — online, offline, and in social networking spaces,” said Pew Internet Project researcher Aaron Smith, author of the report.

“Social networking sites offer a space for individuals who are passionate about issues to share that passion with others, and their engagement with those issues often bleeds over into other aspects of their lives.”

Findings based on a phone survey during a three-week period in 2012 showed that 43 percent of US adults were inspired to learn more about an issue based on information gleaned from a social network while 18 percent were impelled to take action.

People doing well financially or with college educations were more likely than those who were poorer or less educated to be civically or politically active online or offline, according to the study.

“Despite hopes that the Internet could change the fundamental nature of political participation, it is still the case that the well-educated and relatively well-off are more likely to take part in civic life,” said Smith.

Despite online social networks serving as forums for politics, most of everyday discussions and campaign contributions take place offline, according to the Pew report.

my name is loren and i was formerly tumblr user “wanktissue” but i have now taken my blog off because yesterday morning i was given a link to a thread about me on a website called ANONIB.COM where there were nude photos of me underage

after i posted about how disgusted i was at this and that i was taking my blog offline, i also recieved a number of anonymous messages showing me three other threads about me with my full name and home address next to nude pictures of me (with most of them still being underage)

i did not know of the existence of anonib.com and i was disgusted to find that it is a website that encourages guys to stalk girls to find their nudes after finding partially nude photos

this website also doesn’t allow discussion of age, full name or location (a rule that was broken on one of my threads) but i was underage in most of my pictures so i commented on my threads about being underage and what age i was in all the pictures until they were removed however some of the uploaders and commenters have said “you shouldn’t have taken the pictures in the first place this is your own fault”

because my home address was posted, i have had to tell my dad for his and my own safety

i never realised it before but the people in your ask box asking for “more skin” are probably these people

honestly everybody i have spoken to about this has not even known about this website and i really need girls, especially ones that are posting pictures on tumblr, to know that some really disgusting guys are taking your photos and posting them on a thread and seeking to find full nudes, which are then referred to as a ‘WIN’

i’m being really careful as not to slut shame or victim blame as i’ve already been accused of that and that is not what i am saying - PLEASE GIRLS be safe when posting things online and with who you trust with these images and other personal information

You can even — one time — make it clear to that person that you are into them, and if they should find themselves single, you hope you’re the first to know. Don’t touch them while you do this, because the point here is not to tempt them into cheating. You make yourself clear and hope that they extricate themselves from something that they maybe weren’t that into to begin with. After you’ve said it one time, you drop it and never speak of it again until/unless they are single.

You should not, however, be constantly pinging this person with texts and veiled invites and wheedling. Let that relationship die in peace, or thrive. It does not need you circling endlessly overhead, your creepy bald head glistening in the sunlight, your acute sense of smell picking up every sign of impending doom.

“Here’s the thing. Men in our culture have been socialized to believe that their opinions on women’s appearance matter a lot. Not all men buy into this, of course, but many do. Some seem incapable of entertaining the notion that not everything women do with their appearance is for men to look at. This is why men’s response to women discussing stifling beauty norms is so often something like “But I actually like small boobs!” and “But I actually like my women on the heavier side, if you know what I mean!” They don’t realize that their individual opinion on women’s appearance doesn’t matter in this context, and that while it might be reassuring for some women to know that there are indeed men who find them fuckable, that’s not the point of the discussion.

Women, too, have been socialized to believe that the ultimate arbiters of their appearance are men, that anything they do with their appearance is or should be “for men.” That’s why women’s magazines trip over themselves to offer up advice on “what he wants to see you wearing” and “what men think of these current fashion trends” and “wow him with these new hairstyles.” While women can and do judge each other’s appearance harshly, many of us grew up being told by mothers, sisters, and female strangers that we’ll never “get a man” or “keep a man” unless we do X or lose some fat from Y, unless we moisturize//trim/shave/push up/hide/show/”flatter”/paint/dye/exfoliate/pierce/surgically alter this or that.

That’s also why when a woman wears revealing clothes, it’s okay, in our society, to assume that she’s “looking for attention” or that she’s a slut and wants to sleep with a bunch of guys. Because why else would a woman wear revealing clothes if not for the benefit of men and to communicate her sexual availability to them, right? It can’t possibly have anything to do with the fact that it’s hot out or it’s more comfortable or she likes how she looks in it or everything else is in the laundry or she wants to get a tan or maybe she likes women and wants attention from them, not from men?

The result of all this is that many men, even kind and well-meaning men, believe, however subconsciously, that women’s bodies are for them. They are for them to look at, for them to pass judgment on, for them to bless with a compliment if they deign to do so. They are not for women to enjoy, take pride in, love, accept, explore, show off, or hide as they please. They are for men and their pleasure.”
